I installed a new black cartridge and now everytime the printer comes on and calibrates, and as it prepares to print a job it makes a knoccking noise. Once the job starts to pring the sound goes away. It also makes the noise when it is warming up.

I can't quite hear where the sound is originating. Whether it is inside the front door or on the right where tray 1 is located.

Just went out of warranty about 6 months ago. They were out once for service on my DesignJet and did a free cleaning on LJ8550 but now I'm on my own.

Thanks for any suggestings.

During any calibration process the LJ8550 like the 45XX series will check the toners if all are present and also check the status level of those installed. Under this process, there are some mechanical sensors that checks the toners. These are like the carousell rotating mechanism run via the main gear of the printer. If the noise should have been located here, it would definatly be present while printing also. My suggestion is to take out the black toner and start the printer without it. It will then do the calibration again, and you will notice at once if the sound is there or not. If it should still be there, something might either be pretty worn or even damaged inside the printer. Toners are not always gently installed, so there might have been something skewed inside the carousell while inserting the toner.
