closing an excel sheet externaly and opening again!

dear expert,

i have a problem with the excel sheet that i generate thro a VB6 applicatiion.when i click preview the excel sheet is generated,and when i close it externally,"clicking the X control button on the top right corner of the excel sheet",and when trying to generate the same report again,its just hangs!

even after closing the excel sheet i can see the EXCEL.EXE running in the task manager.has it anything to do with the malfunction?does the link between the application and the excel sheet remain even after closing the xls externally?
