We are constantly having files remaining open on the server. Users costantly say that they are closing app down properly but network administrators are constantly having to go to server console and manually closing files......is there a way to have a function or utility to do this from user end?

What kind of file server is it? What OS version and patch level? How is configured to deal with shared files? Are you using any hardware that caches data - caching controllers, RAID controllers, etc.?

There are a lot of possibilities, and your question can't really be answered without much more information. (My questions are likely just the beginning - why can't your network/server administrators answer this question?)

I guess another obvious question is, what type of file?

Another question comes to mind, are you running a virus checker on the server? Have you excluded (minimally) .DBF, .FPT, and .CDX files from any realtime checking? See - "HOWTO: Optimize Visual FoxPro Applications While Using Norton AntiVirus 2002". While they are referring to a single version of a specific product, it also can apply to other versions and other AV products.
