I found this tutorial on cloning a VM on ESXi: The actual cloning process looks straightforward.

My guest OS is Windows Server 2008 R2. The VM to be cloned can be shut down so I'm thinking I can clone, shut off the original, boot the copy, change Server Name and IP address and be ready to go.

However, I remember reading about some issues with changing server name, but don't remember the details. The server is not a DC and not running SQL but is running IIS.

So what entertaining gotchas do I have to look forward to?

It is just that easy. Shut down the original before the clone. After cloning start the new machine and rename, reip and your done. Not sure about IIS though. I would uninstall IIS after the cloning and reinstall it. That way the new machine name will be picked up by the IIS subsystem.

I hadn't thought of uninstalling/reinstalling IIS. Thanks.

Why not just sysprep the server after cloning it? That will take care of the name in IIS and anywhere else it is lurking that you may or may not be aware of.

c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe for Win 2008
