Hi,

i have done all the preparatory steps to clone and 8i database:

-copied all necessary files
- created directories (most already existed)
-deleted the datafiles from the old db.

now, when i try and start the new db, i get a
tns protocol adapter error when I try startup nomount pfile= etc.

I have deleted all the db files for the old db.

Is there something I’m missing: stopping any other services etc?

Have you made any necessary changes to the listener configuration?

i have not gone near the listener, but i don't think i need to as there was a database by the same name as the one i am cloning now there up until last week.

There are quite a few threads dealing with this sort of error - try a keyword search for protocol in this forum. Some suggest changing an NTS entry to none in sqlnet.ora, for example. Sorry I can't delve more deeply at this time - too much to do!
