I have a Networker server on a Solaris box, controlling backups on a NetApp filer. The filer has an attached tape library (NDMP tape server). I have been unable to create a clone of NDMP volumes. Here's what I get:

Automatically copying save sets(s) to other volume(s)

Starting cloning operation...
...from storage node: filer
nsrclone: SYSTEM error: cloning requires at least 2 devices
nsrclone: Cannot open nsrclone session with nwserver
nsrclone: Failed to clone any save sets

I believe the error must be because the Solaris server has only one tape drive. But, I want to use the NDMP tape library, not the server's, and can't seem to do so.

Is it possible to clone savesets/volumes when the tapes reside on an NDMP tape library?

What version of Networker are you using? NW7 just started to support cloning of NDMP savesets. If you are using something earlier 5.x or 6.x you are out of luck.

That's what I suspected -- Thanks for the confirmation. I am running NW 6.1.3. Last I checked, NW 7 was not avail. for Solaris. Will check again today.

There are multiple potential problems:

1. You need at least 2 NDMP tape drives (at the filer).
This means that you can only copy from a NDMP to a
NDMP drive.
2. If you want to setup automatic cloning (what you
obviously do, you must configure the filer's "Clone
storage node" attribute to point to the filer as well.
If not, NW will send the data back to the server where
usually no NDMP backup device is attached.
3. You must use nsrndmp_clone instead of nsrclone.
4. As mentioned before, NW must run version 7.
