Clocking concerns for BCM 400

This is a tough one. Customer has a BCM 400(4.0)and a BCM 50(2.0)in another local location. Approx. 1 mile away. There is a point to point set up between both sites. There are Adtran CSU/DSU units set up at each site to break out the voice and data(8 data channels and 16 voice channels). The configuration stays up for about 1 week and then crashes. We have tested the Adtran units and they seem to be o.k.My first question is where should the clocking come from for this set-up?? It was suggested that clocking should come from the BCM 400. Any thoughts on this.

That is true if there is no T1 from the CO.If there is a PRI at the main site the clock would be primary then the Pt to Pt would be secondary the remote would be primary. If no other T1 then main is master and remote secondary.

Also check the Adtrans and make sure that they are set correctly because you should be able to tell them the clock source also.

When the circuit crashes what do you do to bring it back up?
Do you reboot one of the BCM's or do you disable & re-enable one or the others DTI card. I had a point to point T-1 between a BCM 400 & a BCM 50 that turned out to be a timing issue. Turns out that the C.O. was controlling the
timing & the BCM 50's clock needed to be changed. Can't remember what the settings are on the BCM 50 but if you hold the mouse over the clocking source a help window explains the 3 different choices. Ask your Telco to ckeck the circuit design of the T-1 & see if perhaps the C.O. has control of the clock.
Also do the BCM's generate any alarms when the circuit crashes?

I would make both BCM's primary as the Telco is Master.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Not necessarily if it's a clear channel point to point. Typically there isn't clock on a point to point T-1 unless it passes through a DACS somewhere in the middle, or passes multiple COs. Being a mile apart, I'd be surprised if there was any clock at all from the telco.

I think hawks is on the right track - make sure the adtrans are clocking off the NI port. Let the BCM400 send clock if you need to.
