How can I retain an objects attributes while creating a clipping mask?

For instance:

If I create a white rectangle with a black stroke and create a mask with an object below the rectangle, the attributes are immediately lost. How is this avoided?

The same applies to an opacity mask.

Thank you.

...the top vector object always acts as the mask/clipping shape...

...this is the nature of illustrator, you can re-apply a stroke to a clipping mask and it will be honoured, if you apply a stroke to an opacity mask it will mask out the object underneath by default...

...the attributes are however kept for the object you are masking or opacity masking...

...select an opacity mask by clicking the right hand preview image in the transparency palette, go to you layers and select the opacity mask mask, if you apply a stroke in colour in will be converted to a greyscale alternative as opacity masks only function in black and white...
