I have several cliets that are being updated with the lastest definiton file, but do not show up in the console. I have stopped the Symantec services on the server and re-started as per Symantec's advice, but still not all clients are displayed. I have also reset the realtime protection options so that all clients are forced to communicate with the parent server, but the result is still the same. Parent server is Windows NT4.0 Server SP6, Symantec 8.1 and clients are a mainly W2K.

I would stop the client service on the workstations, then copy the grc.dat file located on the parent server's vphome share to the workstations..here is a little batch file you can try

REM Begin
ping %1
xcopy \\PARENTSERVER\vphome\grc.dat "\\%1\c$\docume~1\all users\applic~1\symantec\norton~1\7.5"
rcmd \\%1 net stop "Norton Antivirus Client" & rcmd \\%1 net start "Norton Antivirus Client"
REM END

Of course this is using rcmd.exe which is a resource kit utlity. You could just copy the parents grc.dat file to a floppy disk and then physically logon to the workstations and stop the service, copy the grc.dat file, then start the service. But I am lazy so I do it all remotely...Hope this helps.

Stiddy:- stopped the Symantec service, copied the GRC.DAT file onto one rogue machine, started the service, but machine is still not showing in the console ????

just a bit more info, If I right mouse click on the group that the clients reports that it belongs too, and select refresh, the client is displayed briefly, then disappears. Checking the registry, an entry exists for the client, and appears to be the same as all other working clients.

SO if in the SSC you select tools/find computer/and perform a local or network search, the machine still dont populate in the SSC???

Found this:

What about the networking basics? Can you ping the client, resolve hostname forward and reverse? Also, are you positive that the server's antivirus service has completely started. I have been have problems running SAV 8.1.134 on WIN2k3 servers. The service never completely starts, it just hangs at 'starting'....

Stiddy: Performed the scan and NO, the machines still do not appear in the console.

If I do an audit from that menu, I get all machines listed, including ones that do not appear in the console. I have scanned the registy, and keys also exist for these machines.

The networking tests all work okay, excluding reverse DNS lookup, as I use DHCP. All services are running as the OS on the server is NT4.0 SP6a
