Hi All,

version 7.4 windows 2003

Our company is going through a host of server name changes. what needs to be done from a backup perspective? i was told that the indexes needs to be merged as if this doesnt happen i will basically make my previous backups null and void as i wont be able to recover.

what else needs to happen during this process and how do i merge the indexes?

thanks in advance.. always appreciate the assistance.

I've not done any index merging, I typically just deploy a renamed host as a new client. Your old backups are not null and void, you just need to set up the appropriate permissions.

If I need to do any recovers from the pre-rename backups, I just set up the appropriate remote access permissions.

Caveat: I'm 7.2.1 on AIX, but I can't imagine 7.4 being any different in that respect.

You can do the following :
First get the client ID, "cut and paste" it in a text editor file.
Then you ad the new servername as an alias to the existing client object.
The you delete the client object and create it again with the new name.
Now Networker tells you that the new client is an alias of an old one, and asks you to type in the client-ID to use the old cfi.
Do this (cut-and-paste it from the file) and you can restore all your old backups.
Chapter 11 method is ok for filedata, but some savesets e.g. Windows System State cannot be redirected.
