ClientApps Folder

I have disk space issues and was wondering if I can delete everything in the clientapps folder.

I don't use anything in it, i'm not even sure how the 2GB of crap got in there, If I set up another machine, I manually install all required software / patches & service packs, so do I really need anything in this folder.

It's just taking up valuable space!

Is it save to kill the contents, or does SBS use it for some reason?

This folder is created during the SBS installation. It is used to deploy software and the computer setup if you use those feature; which it sounds like you don't. You can stop sharing it and move it to a larger drive. There are other places you could belosing space though, I would run WinDirStat and see what folders are taking the space and then look to recapture drive space that way. Typically Windows Updates uninstall files can grab a lot of space as well as AV programs and the downloaded updates (especially Syamntec Endpoint). Also, if you use WSUS, you can loose space with the WSUS database growing so you might want to clean up WSUS. And finally, if you redirect the users My Docs you are also redirecting My Pictures and My Music and My Videos. So check those locations too. Those also have recylcers in them which you can delete.

Yes, I'm not using that feature, but have culled the drive manually and gaind 10GB from space wasting patches, downloads, drivers etc.. which are all on tape should ever their be a panic! or can be downloaded again.

The clientapps folder contains thinks like XP SP2, the server was installed way before that patch was out, so there must be something else adding stuff to this folder, though I'm not sure what, and if that's the case why isn't XP SP3 in there?

oh well, I think i'll leave the ClientApps for now as the space is not a real issue, I wanted to clear out what I could so I could offline defrag the exchange DB and realise the 17+GB of wasted free space it contains, but I've decided not to bother.

The server will last at least another year, by which time I expect to get a replacement, it will be 6 years old by then!

Or is that just wishful thinking, knowing how tight the purse strings are around here, it might have to last another 5 years - lol

Yeah, things can be added to the ClientApps folder. Especially if you did the SBS SP1 install. Part of that process installs XP SP2 for deployment to clients.

I know what you mean about tight purses. Two places most companies look when things get tight - IT & Payroll.

I would say 6 years is a good life for a server. Plus by then, SBS2k8 will be out.

I've moved the clientapps folder on a few sites where space is an issue. Move it to the D drive and reshare it with the same name and permissions.

Thanks for the advice Paul, however it is already on the Drive, so there is nowhere else to move it to :-(
