Hi All,

We have just installed a few Dell 8200 stations with Windows XP professional. I've loaded the current version of Client 32 for XP and everything is running ok...except for a little problem

After logging in the first time we access a network resource (a file open from Wordpoerfect of Excel or even just listing the contents of a directory from my computer), the system takes a very long time to respond to the request. After this first one-time slowdown network access is fine.

Thanks
Michael Gillen

Does anyone have any ideas to what my be causing this.

System has one Tree
Two Servers (NW4.2 and 5.1)
About 40 Workstations (Mostly Win9x, with a few 2000 & XP stations

I presume you mean Client 4.83 when you say the latest? What protocols are you running? If IP, have you got SLP configured? Does this happen on both your 4.2 and 5.1 servers? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Yes It's 4.83. We have IPX running as our main protocol. The 4.2 server is our main data server the 5.1 is used for Bordermanager and groupwise. The slowdown happens on both servers.

Firstly, ensure your network duplex settings on your server are set to half-duplex. Don't bother with full duplex as, often or not, it causes more problems.

Secondly, how have you got your replicas layed out? Is there one on each?

Next, do your servers suffer from utilisation problems? And what Service Packs is on each? -----------------------------------------------------

I'll check the duplex in the morning. NW4.2 SP9 & 5.1 SP3. Utilization is next to nil and it's only the XP stations that are having this problem.

Note the problem only occurs the first time the resources are accessed. I was thinking it has something to do with XP either attempting to cache items and/or it's trying to discover new resources?
