Well, I'm back with another odd question. I have a client that just moved to a Sony Viao and is trying to install his PNY Tech Memory Stick reader and it won't work. PNY support says a driver is not needed with XP, however he is getting a drive designation that won't allow the peripheral to work. Any clues?

Can you be any more specific about the exact name of the hardware device and the problems being encountered? "PNY Tech Memory Stick reader" seems a bit vague and doesn't bring up many hits at Google. What exactly do you mean by "drive designation that won't allow the peripheral to work"? Has he run out of drive letters or is it conflicting with an already assigned letter?

Anything showing up in the Event Viewer or under Disk Management?

One more tidbit to add (thiat probalby doesn't apply in this case) - some of these reader devices require USB2; some won't work with USB1.

Following is a quote from the client, evidently the memory stick is registering as drive F: but is not being recognized by the photo program.

When I slip the memory stick into drive F, the red light flashes just like it used to. But the photo program I've got says insert a disk into the drive. Is it possible that the memory stick needs to be reformatted to work with XP?

I have thought of having him delete drive F: and restarting. Perhaps he should try moving the USB cable to slot 2 as well (as recommended in response 2).

My client reported the following further details:

Already tried moving USB ports, didn't work.
Hardware is PNY Technologies USB reader/writer, single slot memory stick unit. The software I'm using to try to access the peripheral - was Kodak's downloadable on-line free photo software. And I've got Photo Explosion Deluxe also to use. Neither worked.

XP is seeing drive f:, but won't recognize the disk when it is inserted.

I am not familiar with your products, but looking at the support site there are several comments such as these, and others, which you may better understand, being familiar with the actual product.

"PNY recommends running run scandisk (ChkDsk?????) on the memory card."

"If you use your media in a different device, (MP3, PDA or Camera) try to reformat the card using that device."
