I've just configured a new LAN using SBS2003 and exchange server 2003. Clients receive email OK but get the following error when sending 'there was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server ......... <domain name> #5.5.0 smtp;503 This mail server requires authentication when attempting to send to a non-local email address'

I'm not totally sure whether or not I've got my hardware setup correctly or not and whether this might be the problem. I have a firewall (sonicwall TZ180) configured as the gateway on my internal network providing DHCP and
NAT. The firewall is connected to a switch
via a LAN port. I have the servers internal adapter (fixed IP) and external adapter (fixed IP) connected to the switch. Internet access on the network is fine. Should I have the servers external adapter connected to the
switch or should it be connected to a port on the TZ180.
I'm also unable to access the intranet from outside the network. Should I have a port open on the firewall?

WAN IP address = 80.169.200.30
TZ180 LAN IP = 192.168.16.1
server IP ext = 192.168.16.3
server IP int = 192.168.16.2
switch IP = 192.168.16.10

Can you telnet to a remote server over port 25? That should tell you whether it's a firewall problem. I suspect you have something configured in Exchange, such as no anonymous permissions.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Check your Exchange Virtual Server/Properties...Access Tab, then Authentication. I would think by default it would be asking for Basic Authentication/and your Default Domain, and also Integrated Windows Authentication. Are your users using Outlook?

I meant Exchange SMTP Virtual Server. And Anonymous access would be checked. Also, under Users...verify the permissions for domain users to Submit, and Relay. Then check your (under Delivery tab) the Outbound Security...is it set to anonymous access?
