ok so we have two 4500 switches that were in client mode. I had to make changes and put them in transparent mode. the server switch was removed before i got here. so i want to make on of these 4500 the server and put everything else as the client. now what is the impact? these two switches are clustered.

1) do i have to break the cluster?
2) will there be downtime?
3) any special consideration i need to know?

1) I don't believe so
2) No, assuming point #3
3) Make sure that all client switches have a consistent database including revision number. Your server will overwrite the clients database if it has a higher revision number and this may or may not be what you want. If it's not what you want then there will be all out chaos with cars being turned over and set on fire, riot police with tear gas, molotov cocktails being hurled by rioters...it will be terrible.

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

very interesting...how do i get the client switches up to the same revision number?

Myself I would make them both servers , it is good to have a backup if one dies , then all you have to do is plug the replacment in and it will have all the vlans proagated to it. To check the config revision number use "show vtp status" , make sure your server has the higher revicion number , if not then change the client temporarily to trnasparent mode then back to client or server on whatever you decide to do .

In all honesty how often do you add vlans? All you merely save is connecting to the other switch to add the vlans. For 2 switches I would set both of them to transparent and add vlans as needed.

brianinms... i would agree with your assesment but there are more than these two switches. before i got here, there was a server switch (who knows where that went) so now i have to make sure there is a server to propagate changes in the envirnonment

cheers!

Sorry North, because you only mentioned 2 I mistakenly thought those were the only 2 in your environment. I would make sure you create a vtp domain as well as secure it with a password.
