After looking at my SMS 2.0 (sp2) client inventory, I can not find the Serial Number. Does SMS gather this information?

I've edited the SMS_DEF.MOF and can see an entry under PC BIOS in regards to the serial number. Even though the option is set to gather the serial number from the BIOS, the number does not show up in my inventory.

If SMS 2.0 can not pick up the serial number, I think it is the products biggest short comings. (I've found a third party package call Serial Number plus...but it costs a fortune)

Please let me know if you have any information about the serial number. or if you know of any other products that do collect the serial number....like LaNDesk.

Thank you,
(Yes I know I'm answering my own question)

I've been able to find some documentation on this. apparantly, SMS 2.0 with SP2 has the ability to attain the serial number of the machines. I performed a search on TechNet and found this article Q262317. It shows that SMS uses WMI to look at the bios to get the serial number. I have not tried it yet...but I though I would post this information for the rest of you. Please let me know if you know anything about this.

First, the machine must be SMBios 1.2 or latter compatible. Then you must have Microsoft WMI 1.5 or latter loaded, which is default on W2K. Under NT4 you need WMI 1.5 to be loaded (not the default, and you need SP4 or latter to be on the NT4 box first, before you load WMI 1.5, available from Microsoft).

Note: Even with the above you may not get the serial number if the company put the serial number in the 'wrong' location, like many Dell boxes. (Dell is fixing this in the next BIOS release for the Optiplex GX1 & Lattitude series).

You may also experience problems getting this information from Compaq boxes as well. However, if you install the Compaq Insight Management Agents you can use a utility provided with them called Collect. It can be run to gather the asset information, serial #, Bios rev, model, and so on and it will dump this info to a MIF file for SMS.

The syntax is something like "collect /f collect.mif /sms20"

Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com
