Client Printer Mapping 2

Windows 2000 SP4

We've been having printing problems since about the time we installed FR3 (can't remember if it started before or after the upgrade). Only administrators can install client printers, whether I select the UPD or native printer drivers in the CMC.

Also, since I installed FR3, the UPD doesn't show up as an installed printer driver in the MetaFrame farm. With FR2, I used the "compatibility" option under drivers and selected "only allow drivers in the list" and then added the UPD so that only the UPD can be used. If possible, I'd like to use the UPD for everything and not install any drivers into the farm at all. We already had a problem where a Xerox printer driver continually crashed the print spooler on one of the MFXP servers. The driver was automatically installed by a client somehow.

The only way I can get non-admins to install client printers is if I select "Automatically install native drivers for auto-created client and network printers" under Printer Management in the CMC. This installs the printer drivers in the farm, so this is obviously no good. This is how that bad Xerox driver that crashed the spooler got installed the farm.

Any ideas on what I should do to allow non-admins to use the UPD?

When you install FR3, which UPD drivers should show as being installed in the farm? The only UPD driver that I have listed is the "HP Color LaserJet 4500 (MetaFrame XP PCL5c Universal Driver)". When I had FR2 installed, it showed a PCL4 UPD driver.

UPD II consists of the following drivers:

HP Color LaserJet 4500 (MetaFrame XP PCL5c Universal Driver)
HP Color LaserJet PS (MetaFrame XP PS Universal Driver)
HP LaserJet Series II (MetaFrame XP PCL4 Universal Driver)

We have 3 XPa servers, each with MFXP FR3 and Win2K SP4 installed.

I got it working. I had to change the following on each server...

Citrix Connection Configuration - ICA - Client Settings -

Under "Connection", "inherit user config" was checked so I unchecked it, which allowed me to select the following 3 items...

Connect Client Drives at Logon
Connect Client Printers at Logon
Default to Main Client Printer

This probably doesn't matter anymore, but should I have the 3 UPD drivers installed into the farm? I only have the 4500 installed.

If you have any chance of installing win2k server on a desktop, then add XP fr3, and then export the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3
Then copy the content of the folder:
C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3
to a back up place.

Then stop the printers pooler service on your faulty server.
Then overwrite the files from the backup on your faulty server. (don't overwrite never files)
Then import the regkey on your faulty server.
Then start the printers spooler service

That should be enough to get UPD II working.
