I am at my wits end!!!!!

My wireless laptop (client)can see my shared printer attached to my desktop(host)and my printer was detected when I installed it on the client but when I try to print from the client the job just gets stuck in the print queue with error-printing status. My network is configured correctly and as I said the printer can be seen on both pc's. I can print no problem on the computer that the printer is attached to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PLZ HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to insure that the client has the correct setup for this printer... tempoarily connect it to the client & check that it will print to this printer as a local device.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply

I attached the printer (lexmark 5250)to the laptop via usb and it prints fine. However, I did notice while my lap top was beside my desktop that on the host a window comes up saying problems communicating with the printer and if I cancel the job then the queue is cleared. So now I at least know that it is a communication prob. I am pretty sure that the network is working as I can share files and infact am using my host internet connection on my client pc right now. The printer comes up as lexmark 5200 series on DESKTOP (host)and port is usb001. I also installed the printer on the client as a local with the port path \\DESKTOP (host comp name)\lexmark5 (printer share name).Any other Ideas?

Thanks in advance

I think I may have found the prob.

The print queue says it is being sent from a guest account dispite the fact that I am logged in as admin. Could this be a restricted access problem? The client pc runns xp home and the host xp pro.

Just delete the printer, and set it up all over again.

Your IP address probably changed, based on the start-up sequence on the router. I have no problem printing to any computer, unless I reboot the router.

Thanks for the reply dglienna

I have deleted and reinstalled this printer on both the host and the client numerous times to no avail. I am pretty sure that my ip has not changed on either machine. One question though, when adding a new port to print to is the ip address of the host pc the same as the ip of the printer? if not how do I find the ip of the printer

Let me ask the simple obvious question:

When installed on the host, is/has it been shared?

On the host start > my network places > in other places select printers/faxes... a windoe with the installed printers will come up, find the printer in question and look for the printer cradled in a hand.

If it is not with a hand... right click it and select sharing and share it.

The printer is shared on both machines but on the host my network places folder doesn't show printers or faxes so I added a new network place and browsed to entire network\microsoft windows network\WORKGROUP\laptop\printers and faxes but it is not expandable and when it is hilighted the ok radio button is greyed out

What OS is on both machines? To print to my W2K or W2K3 machines, I have to log in before anything will print. I just run \\desktop, log in, and then try to print.

Another option is to create an account on your desktop that has the same username and password as the one that you use on your laptop. Windows will apply it automatically, and should print for you.

Another thought may be a firewall that is blocking the printer.

the host is running xp pro and the client xp home. I have already tried to create an account on the host that matches the client account and still nothing. The firewall on the host is disabled and I have forwarded the 9100 port for raw on the router. the client firewall is still off as well. I don't think that the anti virus has anything to do with it either because I usually will get a warning if norton has blocked a remote command and I have not recieved any messages of this type.

thanks for the reply

Ahhh. The cursed Norton Syndrome. You might want to disable it for 15 minutes to try it again.

I swear, I've noticed more problems that were caused by different AV programs. I had one box that couldn't get on the Internet, but as soon as I removed the AV software, everything was fine, even when I re-installed it.

I see a majority of problems on NAV/NIS boxes, whether it be viruses, or trying to remove the program to scan with another AV program. We consider it to be the worst on the market. I got bit, after using it for years. Last summer, I couldn't boot up my laptop, and couldn't do anything to fix it.

I had to reinstall XP Home, which deleted a few folders that I really didn't want to delete.

I've been using and recommending Avast ever since.

should i disable norton on host or client b4 printing?

i finally got it to print but the host computer shows a window saying unable to communicate with the printer. if you press continue then the print job will actually print. however this could be annoynig when I need to print more than one job at a time. Anyone know why it says it cant communicate but will print anyways?
