Hey all just joined up and already my first question. I have just recently started experimenting with SMS. I have a collection which just recently received new computers running windows XP. The collection still contains the computers names from the old computers so basically there are double computer names in the collection.

An example would be jdaly and jdaly-xp. All new computers have the -xp suffix on the end.

So I want to make sure that all of these new computers are being updated with the newest patches using the mbsa. I added all the new xp computers to the collection using direct rules and they showed up in the collection no problem.

Here is where it gets tricky. I looked and the computers I just added are not clients. About half of them are assigned and the other half are not. In our organization we have client discovery and client push configured so these should already have had the clients installed on the before I even added them to the collection.

I attempted to use the client install from the sms administrators console to install the advanced client on each of these machines 3 days ago and so far no changes. I looked on the client machines to check the logs but there was no CCM or CCMSETUP folders on these machines. At this point I am just about stumped as to what could be the problem with these machines. Im hoping some of you can help

Duplicate computer will not get deleted automatically unless you have the Maintenance task setup to do so. Look at the following: Scenarios and Procedures for Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003: Maintenance, Backup and Recovery

I will also suggest you look and try what described in the following threads: thread22-1037864, thread22-1063425. If you still have problems after that, write again

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe I wasnt clear on my description, these computers in the colection that are not showing as clients are not duplicate computers. They are brand new computers. For an example an old computer jdaly was a 800mhz POS. The new computer jdaly-xp is a new optiplex from dell. So there is no dupication of computers in the sms collection especially since the old computers are now collecting dust in a back room.

Heartbeat discovery, network discovery, and AD system discovery are all enabled and appear to be working correctly. Client push installation is also configured and is working correctly (at least for other systems).

Even if the above client push wasnt working properly shouldnt I be able to do an install using the administrator console? Im oout of ideas here short of running the client install manually on each computer.

XP service pack 2 with the firewall on?

anything in the ddm.log?

They have file and print sharing turned on....the rights to install the client..

Thats the only thing I can think of that may be weird is the rights to install the client. What rights should I check for to make sure that everything is set.

depends on what way you are trying to install the clients.... for instance push you would need to make a sms push account that has rights on all clients (domain admin is easiest,,)
