Client locking up

Hi. We have a few of our GroupWise client options "locked". For example, we have users setup to automatically have messages archived after 180 days. Recently, I have had several users complain to me that their GroupWise clients will suddenly lock up. They are using Windows 95 or 98. I can recreate the problem on my PC while logged in as the complaining users however I have NT and the problem exhibits itself by closing the GroupWise client altogether. I have found that if I do a "Reset Client Options" maintenance on the users, which "unlocks" the client options, the problem goes away.

What I figured is that a message trying to archive is corrupted and that is causing the problem. What is really odd though is that if I then go into the user's options and manually set it to archive messages after 180 days, the problem does not reoccur. I even archived EVERYTHING for one of my user's but as soon as I locked her back down the lockups began reoccurring. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks.

Hi. Okay, I may have been wrong when I said I can manually reset the options and the problem goes away. The user had the lockups until I cleared out all of the cleanup options. I don't know what to think because like I said, I archived everything for one of my user's experiencing this problem and she still locks up if any of her cleanup options are set. Thanks.

It is GroupWise 5.5.4. I just checked Novell's site and I didn't see any patches above our current version that appear applicable to my problem. Thanks.

If the users try running on a different machine does the error still occur? If it does the problem will be with the users database. You will need to run some gwchecks on the users that are having problems.

I would start with a structural rebuild then an analyse and fix. Lee Smith
