I have one workstation, Win XP Pro SP2, Novell Client 4.91 SP4. When the workstation boots up, the client logon window appears as normal. The user enters username and password. Next the "results" window opens showing the user attaced to the server, but the logon process freezes. Using task manager one can end the process, but the desktop never appears, and a hard power off is required to solve the lock-up. If upon restart the user chooses workstation only, then uses the "N" tray icon to logon, logon is sucessful. Any thought on what is happening here? This just came on overnight, spyware and virus scans are clean.

Are you using SLP in your environment, and that sounds like a timeout trying to reach the server, and if you waited long enough (about 5 min), you may get an error message.

yep sounds a good starting place

if you get pc up - check the slpinfo /all

Thanks for your responses. SLP is not configured here. I tried to logon again, this time I waited maybe to get an error message. After about three minutes or so, the logon process finished normally. I shut down and restarted the machine, logged on. This time the wait was only about thirty seconds. I don't know if this figures in, but the user tells me that all this started after some windows updates installed. Thirty second wait we can deal with.
Thanks again,
Bill

why is slp not configured?

this is easy to do and highly benificial

Do you have the single sign-on check box? Try selecting disable single sign-on for this connection (I don't know if that is the exact name of the check box).
