I am trying to connect a laptop running XP pro to desktop with win2000. On the W2000 computer, I R clicked on C drive, selected sharing tab, highlighted the "share this folder" radio button. When I connect using the laptop I can see the W2000 drive C, when I click that it ask me for a password and username. I have never set up such on any computer. What is it asking me to do?

It wants a valid username and password that matches a user created on the desktop.

Go to the Desktop, Control Panel, Usser Accounts, and create a new user with a password. (No blank or empty passwords).

No when you are prompted from the laptop enter the credentials of this newly created user.

Win 2000 does not have user accounts in control panel. XP does. I assume that I need to create password in win 2000 computer. This is the computer I am trying to accesss from the XP os.

Sorry, may I add it is actualy Win 2000 "advanced server" and the computers are connected via router.

Are you setup as a Domain, or is this Workgroup networking? There are important differences.

The general case:

Additions to the general case in Workgroup settings:
For a Domain:
Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Users and Computers

Choose a container within which you want to create the user. Right-click container for New > user.

For an AD Domain:
Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers.

Client probaly being the wrong word, I did set up work groups. Win 2000 can see and enter XP. XP can see and not enter Win 2000. I followed workgroup direction on Win 2000 computer. There is a note that password has to be same as login for the XP computer. When I type user name and pass word on XP username adds the file name I am trying to enter and nothing happens. I am not sure about "you must change passwod at net logon" box that is checked either.
i sure I am not using common sense here, but am i getting close?

Q1: "I am not sure about "you must change passwod at net logon" box that is checked either."

A1: The only box in that dialogue box that should be checked is for 'Password never expires'.

You are getting close. Be aware that not all folders will be accessible. Read closely:
For example, it is not possible to read the contents of your Win2k user profiles.

Got it! Got it! Dance around the room got it! As I thought I was making it too complex for myself. I boot up on the Win 2000 so much and hit ctrl, alt del, then just enter, I didn't even think of the password on that system. Duh! Thanks for the direction.
