one of my client machines periodically loses network connection with the server (have run all troubleshooting/diagnostics on usual stuff..NIC/cabling etc) .. first of all there was no connection at all, couldn't ping etc, then managed to connect partly to the server and the rest of the network and finally when trying to map network drives on the client, an error message came up saying "No logon servers available to service logon request".. can anyone explain what this means please?

How are you pinging. By name or by IP address. If it is an IP address ping and you are not getting a response check for hardware or binding problems. It is not uncommon for network settings and protocols to get messed up. If you are using the computers name then you have an all to common problem. Some systems take time to gather network information. If you have a hosts file, DNS, or WINS you system does not need to find other computers on the network it just references one of those services. If you system never finds the server try putting the server name and IP address in the hosts file. If that doesn't work start looking for hardware or connection problems again. You could also try a different network card. I have had a number of cheaper and onboard cards that work for crap under 2000.
