Has anyone seen the following error?

"File.CSV cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding."

The error is linked to Novell's Client 4.83 and only happens when you try to open the file from the network. The file will open fine if copied to the hard drive first.

I know I can go back and replace with the previous client but was just woundering if anyone knows of a fix before I go do that.

System Details:
Windows 2000 Pro SP2
Office XP Pro SP1
Novell Client 4.83
File Caching = Off
Novell Netware Server 5.0

If you have any info, please let me know.

Thanks,
Shayne

Do you use long name on your NetWare server? Check if namespace are loaded and added correcly on your server. Sometimes is possible to have a syntax error.

I know that some issues related to Office applications:

Check the above link. You can download MIXMODFX.It is a patch that is good to have it.

Gia, Thanks for the response but the patch is for Netware 4.11...All Seven of my servers are running 5.0. Plus it just happens in this case the file names and directories leading to it are < 8 char's.

Thanks again for the suggestion!!

Shayne,
do you have that error just for .CSV files?
If so, it is interesting. ZEN component of the client could intercept opening such a file... that is an inventory file for ZEN. And that's why it is happening just when you acces it from the network (then the NW client is involved).

I would like to know more. Please keep in touch.

Yeah - So far .CSV files are the only ones coming up with this error.

I'm not utilizing ZEN here at this site. Does part of it get installed with the client even though it's not being used? If so, do you know of any way to disable it?

You could see if Workstation Manager is installed? That is the part of the Novell Client that interacts mainly with ZENworks. To disable it, just don't install it as part of the client installation. -----------------------------------------------------

Does this error occur before, after or during login? Does your Login Script process without any errors?

Please advise.

I have the same problem on my environment. (NW5, Excel 2000,NWNT-Client 4.83 ). I'm trying to open a TXT file into Excel from the network drive and getting every time a bloody message that the file is read-only. I've tried to copy the same file to a NT Server and opened than from there without problems. It is the Netware Server or the client but I'm not finding a solution on the Net.
Does anyone have a helpfull hint?

There is a second patched NWFS.SYS up as of 6/3/02

I was having the same problem even though I had the first NWFS.SYS patch installed.

client:

Windows XP
Client 4.83 patch 1
Excel 2000 (Word 2000 was fine)

Server:
Netware 5.1 SP2

Excel 2000 could not open any text file (.prn, .txt, etc.) on the Netware 5.1 SP2 server. Word 2000 could open the same files.

The NWFS.SYS dated 5/29/02 solved the problem

One of my users is reporting that he emailed an excel file to external customers and THEY get the "The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding" error. Apparenlty about 11 different clients get this error, with different excel files. We can all open them fine on our side. Has anyone seen this?
