Problem: Clicking on a .exe file clears the page and puts a small "box" icon on the page in the upper left.

Version: When problem was originally detected, it was IE v5.01. Upgraded to v5.5 SP2, but didn't work. Downgraded to v4.? prior to v5.01, then brought back up to v5.5 SP2 with similar results.

Error Message: None. Nothing but a little icon and only for .exe files.

Anybody got an idea?

Mikefive,

By now, you probably have mismatched versions of dll's on your system, which makes the problem even worse.

Did you try the repair process after going to 5.5?
Go to Start>Run line>type
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance

Go to Start>Run, type vcmui. If you find backed-up versions that are newer than the present versions, replace them here.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Security tab , then the Custom Level button. Under ActiveX Controls and plugins, set it up like this:

Download Signed ActiveX Controls and plugins...Prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX Controls...Disable
Inirialize and script ActiveX Controls not marked as safe...Disable
Run ActiveX Controls and plugins...Enable
Script ActiveX Controls marked safe for scripting...Enable.

Or this Knowledge Base article (Error Locating Object Handler)

reghakr...You are the boss! I couldn't find that blurb on Microsoft's site, but removing that registry key fixed it. Can I buy you a cup of coffee or something? ;-) Thanks. :)
