Is it possible to make a web page have a clear/transparent background.

So I could open a web page and see all the content on the desktop

I don't think so, since the background is being created by the web page and the browser application

There are many ways to skin this cat,
but it still tastes like chicken

No you can't do that, it is not a function of HTML, it is the fact of the physical browser software, if you had transparent windows (I think you get get an add or or tweak or something) then you would be able to. Regards

Just throwing my 2c in out of interest:

As Big Dave ;) and Bastien have mentioned, it is the operating systems User Interface system that controls how a window looks, and as far as a web-site goes, you can't create this effect for everybody.

You can, if you are interested, create it for yourself tho'. There is an application (DesktopX, I think) that allows you to customise the UI completely (including transparancies, menus, startbars etc) its been a while since I used it last, but it is pretty funky....
