Vector Query :
If we collect 8 digits after an announcement and the caller mistakenly enters 9 digits, then the last digit is 'stored' so when we prompt the caller to try again and enter digits the PBX is using this stored digit as the first number in the new collection of eight (and of course will again return an incorrect choice even if they do enter a correct 8 digit account at this point).

Is there a command or trick that will clear out any 'stored' collected digits?

I'd think that if you had a "collect 8 digits after announcement 555" and you popped in 123456789, the system would take 12345678 and continue. If the next menu item was "press 9 for an agent" then that next step would happen.

Maybe you collect 9 digits and do a "if digits >100000000 go to step 10" and step 10 says "Hey! We said 8 digits! try again!
