Clean scanned text

I scanned old newsprint (black and white) and need to get rid of the discolored background.

I remember a thread that explains how to clean up scanned text but I can't seem to find it.

 
You could:

Desaturate everything.

Then use LEVELS to control the amount of gain in the scan.

Don't forget, use adjustment layers to ensure that your material retains its original integrity.

You could also convert to bitmap and use 50% threshold. Or scan as a bitmap to begin with. Then (depending on how bad your background problem is) you should only have to clean up spots.

Wow JT that almost looked like you knew what you were doing!
 
Thanks to both, I give it a try tonight and let you know the results.

Still, there was a wonderful post here someplace that had a great solution, I just can't seem to find it.
