How can I build a clean map when I have hundreds of icons.

We have 2 core routers each with frame relays to 200 WAN sites. Also, we have 15 LAN sites that connect back to these core routers.

Every site has its own subnetwork. The Auto-drawn map openview creates is just a big ball of yarn. there are lines going every direction.

And this hasnt even begun to cover the switches.

please help

This is a default discovery appearance of the MAP. You need to ceate locations and drop appropriate routers/servers/switches to their own locations. Please refer to NNM documentation for this.

There also is a way to create rules on what to discover and what not to discover. If you follow documentation for NNM that is posted in PDF format on HP's site you should be able to figure this out.

I have this same situation. I worked with the router folks (which is actually me and another person) to define location Icons based in my case upon DLCI numbers and their related network numbers. My network is primarily p-mpt F/R with some FR over ATM. L2NET has been useful for monitoring the state of the ATM piece of the network which we control to some extent via PASSPORT 6400 devices.
Anyway, each of my location bucket type icons has all the routers/networks for a given P-mpt environment. I set OV to discover but not manage all non-snmp devices. Net Ops is instructed to watch color of the buckets and take appropriate action when non-green. My ops statff has their own R/W map and I have them unmanage things based up name and device type. E.G. A server goes offline we unmanage since there are other tools used for monitoring the servers specifically. OpenView is used just to keep an eye on the network as a whole. Hope this helps.

You could get around this problem as well by using map filters. you could have one map for routers one for servers and one for switchs for example. This call all be done by using map filters. Take a look at the Guide TO Scalability in the last section for information all about filters. The document cane be found at
