Withe C drive FDISKed and Formatted and with system files transferred, I have rebooted using boot disk (with CD-Rom support). However, at the A:\ prompt when I type "setup" and [enter] I get the message that DOS does not recognize this type program. What have I done wrong.

Jim

double check your floppy to see if there is a setup to point to a cd rom drive

or just change the drive to your cdrom drive and then type setup, if you only have the win9x folder then you need to cd down inside that folder before setup command will work

If you are trying to install Windows from the CD, you need to run setup.exe on the CD ROM drive, not A:\ (the floppy). Change to the drive letter your CD is on and try it again.

Hey there. Im also installing Win98 after I have formatted the hard drive. I go to run the setup.exe file from the cd rom, and it checks the hard drive, and it comes up clean. Then it proceeds to copy the files to the hard drive, and it just sits there. I have copied the files from the cd to the hard drive, and tried installing it that way, but the same thing happened, whereas it got stuck copying the files. I have checked the cables over and over again, and everything seems to be ok. if someone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!
Andy

check your win98 cd to see if you either have a bad scratch or dirt on it
if not, is this a oem cd or a backup cd ?

If you are doing a clean install you shouldnt have to do much as far as typing in commands . Make sure that your A:/ drive is set up for 1st boot in the BIOS so whin you boot up with the MS Boot Disk it will be the first to run thin go from there following the prompts to the install

Make sure that you fdisk-ed with the same OS version as the one your are trying to install. Windows very very particular...

I have a legit windows 98se cd with the codes and everything. Problem is, the cd has become too scratched to run setup or copy certain files. A cab file has become corrupted and the cd wont detect files required for the communications/ and the backup utility.

My question is: "Will microsoft replace this?" I assume there will be a fee involved, but I really need to replace this as it belongs to a friend. Not that I will tell microsoft that. I would get nothing if I did that.

I need to replace this cd as it isn't mine but a good friends. If it was mine I would just use linux, but a good friend is worth more than a 98se cd.

M$ should replace it (for a small fee) if you have a licence for it.

Come on, it is your responsiblity to look after your own cd, you are allow to make backup of your own cd.

i for one always use backup for rough use, so i won't damage my original, you can replace your cd for a minimum cost

Well, thanks for that. Unlike you, I am not fallible. I do make mistakes. I was kind of of the impression that it was illegal to make back up of a licenced cd that wasn't mine. (Read the original message and you will see that i stipulated such).

Obviously I am not as intelligent as you. May the heavens above forgive me for this horrendous indescretion.
