I am attempting to install XP on an old computer of a freinds. He originally had win2000 on it but all he was concerned about were a few files. I attached the drives to my comp ripped the files he wanted and reformatted the drive. When trying to run a clean install it has given strange behaviors. sometimes it shuts down immediatley. sometimes it reuns the first part of setup but stops at either the HAL (hardware abstraction layer)
or the Mount Point Manager. i have put his hd in my comp and installed widows there so i know thw disk is good. I've tried everything form changing RAM, ROM, and HD in his comp but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or starting points will be appreciated. by the way its an Intel celeron and it was getting all the way to desktop before i stripped it.

Upgrade the Computer BIOS.

Before you start the install process, obtain and install the latest basic input output system (BIOS) upgrade for your computer from the computer manufacturer. If no Bios update is available set bios to original defaults. Make sure any Bios anti virus scanner is disabled.

If you've got USB devices, unplug them until you're done with the initial install, then plug them in and install them once the system is up and running.

Q305595 - HOW TO: Create a Boot Disk for an NTFS or FAT Partition in Windows XP

The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software (also floppy bootable) to check the condition of the drive. A good idea would to check the condition of the hard drive in the machine it is going to run on in case there is a fault with that setup.

If Setup is able to get some way into the install you can also review the Setupapi.log file, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file (in the %windir% folder) to try to determine any problems.

I wonder if you could get it in on a FAT32 Partition, and convert it to NTFS later?
