Marketing Bulletin PA20070269 seems to clearly imply that by upgrading our 3300s to rls 8 that we thereafter can perform future system upgrades in a fraction of the time it once took and minimize the time for a service interruption.

By contrast, the training module for rls 8 seems to contradict this statement, stating that 512 megs of ram is required in order to have this ability.

I'm not concerned about getting the systems to rls 8. I'm asking about the future, i.e., going forward, from rls 8 onward.

Can someone please clarify this for us in more unambiguous terms? Thanks.

The Online upgrade requires your controller to have 512 MB of RAM. The reason being is the software creates a RAM disk for part of the upgrade process.

Assuming you have a beefy enough controller, yes, the upgrade only takes the PBX out of service for the duration of a reboot rather than the usual 45-60 minutes. However, there's still some bugs with the online upgrade between 8.0 and the UR releases, as I found out the hard way.

Still the Bulletin seems to fly in the face of the training documentation. If 512 megs is mandatory then the marketing bulletin needs to say so. I guess we just consider the source (marketing).

No denying the concept is great. It's a shame it doesn't work or cannot be used with the installed hardware base. We take mucho heat from the customer now every time we recommend a s/w upgrade because of the downtime. What they used to let us do over the noon hour with their 2K's we now have to go in at midnight on Saturdays.
