CL5446 card and WIN98 new hardware wizard

I have installed WIN 98SE on a clean 1.2GB disk. Each time the set boots up, the "New Hardware Found" facility shows the CL5446PCI card, installs the driver and asks to reboot. Rebooting starts the process again - bnew hardware etc. Answering NO to the restart lets the machine use the CL5446 driver (ver 1.41 as the latest. However, a cold reboots prompts for the new hardware again.
I am now on my fourth reformat and reinstall - anyone have any idea of the cause?
