Hello-

I'm having a interesting issue that I would certainly appreciate your input.
Here it goes

When users access Citrix and load MS Word, they constantly get a message being displayed that says "MS installer is now preparing to install the application for the first time". Thinking this was an issue with MS office suite, I performed a MS Office installation repair to see if the issue would go way. Well clearly it did not. Users when login into citrix still get the same message which eventually goes away.

Now when I give a regular user full admin rights the message never come up when loading MS office. It appears to me that the issue might be related to the registry or something else.

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks

There are some very Citrix/TS specific steps for installing MS Office - at least there were for Office 2003 and you didn't specify version. But it is not just putting the server into install mode and running file setup.

They have the latest version of Citrix. All has been running fine for a good while. This is not a new install.

I was asking about the version of Office. As it is not a new install, when was the most recent Office patch/update?

Any errors in the event log? Also, you said when you give them full admin rights the message never come up when loading MS office - does it reappear for that person after you remove admin rights?

Also, is it possible to run a program like regmon when only 1 user is on Citrix to isolate the reg keys it is looking for?

I remember tracking this kind of issue down many years ago. I'll dig through my notes and old Reg hacks as it had to do with a registry key set in HKLM instead of HKLU and where install info for terminal services is kept in the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\

When loading applications on Citrix, if you need to install it for all users, you have to go to a command prompt and change the mode you are using.

For single user mode it is change user /install and for all user mode it is change user /exec (I think). I have only done this a couple of times in the last couple of years.

You could try it on something simple like publishing notepad for all users and test it before tackling MS Office.

If anyone sees an error here, feel free to point it out.
