Curretnly we have Citrix installed on a w2k server. The terminal liscensing goes out after 90 days. The ICA client uses terminal services. Windows says you muct have a liscense server installed on a dc. we purchased 15 ica client lisc. How do you enter the liscenses for citrix into the terminal services lisecnsing? or is there a workaround for this?

Do you also have Terminal Service licenses? They are different from MF licenses. Win2k and XP have a built in client license, but win98 and win95 do not, so for every win9x PC that connects you will have to have a Terminal service license and a MF license.

Jon, Thanks for the tip....should of read the FAQ's first...We are useing all w2k and xp. So thats one less license I will ahve to worry about.

quell,

Microsoft requires you to have a TS CAL (Terminal Services Client Access License) for each device that connects to a Windows 2000 Terminal Server.

This still holds true even when you have Citrix. So you need 15 ICA connection licenses for the server farm, and you need 15 MS TS-CAL's for 15 client "DEVICES" to connect to the server.

Ok so that sounds simple right? Well now it gets tricky. Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP have a "built-in" TS-CAL. Meaning you do not need a TS-CAL for these computers. You do however need a terminal services licensing server activated on your network in order for these clients to get their built in TS-CAL activated and to function properly.

If you have Win9x, Macintosh, Linux, or any type of Thin Client device connecting to the Citrix server you will need to purchase a TS-CAL for each of these "Devices".

Now Citrix in my opinion is much smarter and really understands how licensing for server based computing should work. They after all developed the technology for Windows. They require a license for every "connection". Meaning I can purchase 15 ICA connections, so at any one time 15 clients can connect. The 16th connection will be denied until someone disconnects or logs off and then that 16th user will be able to connect.

Bill Gates on the other hand is a greedy rich snob who wants to get paid for his operating system. So you have to have a TS-CAL for every single device that connects. So if I have a desktop at work and I connect to Citrix I need a TS-CAL for that computer. If I have a PDA that I connect to Citrix with I have to have a TS-CAL to for my PDA. I even have to have a TS-CAL to connect to Citrix when I have to take a leave of absence from work and take care of my poor old sick mom in Tucson for 3 weeks and use her computer to connect to Citrix.

I hope that explains it.

Just FYI with Windows 2003 Terminal Server good old Bill wised up a bit and they now have the option to have a "User" TS-CAL instead of a "Device" TS-CAL. So now I just need a TS-CAL for every user I want to connect to my Citrix server. This is much better, but they have done away with the "OS built-in TS-CAL" so you will need to purchase a TS-CAL for Windows 2003 no matter what operating system you are using. Plus this still isn't as forgiving as the Citrix licensing which only cares about how many connections are made to the server at any one time. If I had an operation with 15 people connecting to the server during the day shift and 15 different people connecting during the night shift I would need 30 "User TS-CAL's" but still only need 15 Citrix ICA connection licenses.

I hope that wasn't more information than you wanted, but honestly Licensing a Citrix box is one of the more confusing topics related to MetaFrame for people (no thanks to good old Microsoft). Don't get me wrong I don'have a blood lust for Bill Gates or anything, I've just spent many hours fixing TS-CAL problems for people!
