Windows 2000 SP1, MetaFrame Version 1.8 SP2

When using Citrix Server Administration and resetting a user's session sometimes the Server Administration app will freeze. Also when launching the Server Administration app, no information is gathered.

Sometimes to resolve the issue I restart the Server or try to Stop and Start the Program Neighborhood service.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but something is breaking the ICA browser.

It's supposed to be completely fixed at your SP level, but other factors can affect it - I've even seen issues where more than one protocol is used.

What is your setup? How many M/F servers?

What messages (if any) are appearing in the event log to coincide with browser failure?

Does the Admin Tool fail on the console or only via a session?

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response.

We have 1 Metaframe server.

I cannot find any messages that appear in the event log that relate to the freeze.

The admin tool fails on the console.

Are the users on the same subnet as the MetaFrame server?

Is it typically a remote user or a user on a different subnet that causes the issue to occur?

How long is it, approximately, between reboots and the Admin Tool freezing?

Are you using Microsoft's Network Load-Balancing? This is known to break the ICA browser.

Check printer drivers. If you are using HP printers, especially newer models, try using an OEM equivalent.

Presumably you have set the server to Always become the Master Browser?

Check all networking settings - on the server and the clients.

Ensure that the Citrix server has correct entries in the DNS lookup and reverse lookup tables.

Try using network monitoring tools to see if there are any issues with either broadcasts or delayed ACKs.

Try removing all protocols except TCP/IP from the MetaFrame server.

If you have Novell Netware, ensure none of the clients are running 802.3, since this can cause what appear to be lockups, but in fact are bottlenecks induced by heavy broadcasting.

I hope some of this helps

I have checked everything I think I possibly can and everything checks out ok.

The only thing I find that helps is to schedule the server to restart every morning. Since I have been doing this I have not had a need use the Server administration app, thus no freezing of the app.

This is a quick fix for the problem. I am not sure of the root cause.

Thanks for your help.

Did you have a regular reboot cycle before this?

It's almost a requirement in this kind of environment - think of it in these terms:

If you've got 100 users using PCs, how often would the PCs be rebooted (each)?

That's why a terminal server should be rebooted every few days!

NT4 TSE needed to be rebooted every day - or at the very least every other day - on most installations I worked at.

It's a bit odd, because I've worked on WinFrame (NT 3.51) boxes that hadn't been rebooted for months

Hope this helps

Hello. I have a very similar issue with the server administration locking up. We have two servers. When the admin program opens it shows info on one but not the other. It just so happens that when this happens users cannot connect through their ICA client (2000Desktop), they gey an error to the effect of "There was a problem connecting to the server....."

The only way I can fix it is to reboot at once. We have also had issues with our nightly reboot script working on one but not the other (scripts identical!!) Also, I made a registry setting through "Policy Editor -Open registry" to delete cached profiles. This did work fine and now at the same time as the rest of theses issues, the profiles stay locally and is causing great grief.

Desperately seeking assistance.
