Citrix logon server requirement

We have a 2 server farm with TSE/MT1.8 supporting about 40 users.

Every so often a user logging in will freeze the server that the user is logging into. The server freeze is for a few minutes and once the new user is in, the server is fine.

Talking to various people, one issue may be that we do not have a separate Citrix server to handle the logins.

What I would like people to comment on is if this could be the problem and if so what sort of spec this logon server needs. Also do I only need Windows NT and Citrix server licenses for this server. I assume as no users will actually be using for server for work, no client access licenses are required.

Many Thanks

2 servers for 40 users sounds a very good ratio.

How big are the users' profiles? Also, how many devices (network drives, printers, etc) have to be mapped when the users log in?

You don't need a separate Citrix login server, but the convention is to have all users authenticate to an NT domain (Active Directory or whatever) so that roaming profiles can be used.

...or have I misunderstood somewhere? CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

We have about 20 printers on the net work. Most of them are attached to PCs. Users tend not to be connected to more them 5 at a time.

We have an NT domain controller which is also the file server. Users map to 11 drives on the file server.

Users are on roaming profiles with the user profiles held on the file server. I try to keep the user profiles below 3MB.

What I understand is that the Citrix log on process can take up a large amount of CPU time on the server which causes the server freeze during the log on process and this can be avoided by using a separate Citrix server purely to handle the session starts.

But from what you may be saying this is not true. Any comments anyone.
