One of my clients has me connect to their network via Cisco VPN Client (v4.0). Another client used NetScreen-Remote. I've never been able to have both installed on my laptop and have both work. Today I reformated the laptop and first installed NetScreen-Remote. I was able to connect. I then installed the Cisco VPN Client and was able to connect to NetScreen. However, I was not able to connect via Cisco.

First, when I clicked CONNECT, I got the error (wasn't even prompted for login) "Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client Reason: Unable to contact the security gateway". On Cisco's site, the only info I could find stated "You must add UseLegacyIKEPort=0 to the profile (.pcf file) for the VPN Client 4.x to work with Mac OS X 10.3" Though I'm using a XP Home laptop, I thought I'd try that.

Once I added that to the profile and clicked CONNECT, I was prompted for my login info. Once I entered that, the message in the bottom left corner of the VPN client window stated "Securing Communication Channel" and the progress bars continued to scroll left to right. After 10 minutes, I cancelled the connection.

In the past, I've had to uninstall the NetScreen-Remote in order to connect to Cisco. Has anyone run into this or have any solutions.

Conflicts between VPN clients are nothing new. A while back Cisco incorrectly implemented something and it kept our Nortel clients from installing correctly. I know it was the Cisco client in that case because Nortel isolated the problem and provided the proof to me, which I provided to Cisco. Anyway, there is rarely a solution other than to upgrade to the newest clients to see if the problem has been fixed.

Another solution, which I can use on my laptop because I don't use the corporate image, is to install some flavor of virtualization software and run a virtual machine. I have one with the cisco client and another with the Nortel client.
