Just recently I set up two Cisco Wireless-N gigabit security routers with VPN. I currently have a IPSec tunnel connected between the two. the two ip ranges are 192.168.1.x and 172.168.1.x ... I'm currently connected to the 192.168.1.x side and I'm able to ping all of the machines on the 172.168.1.x side but I'm unable to do much else. I've enabled netbios over TCP/IP on a couple of the computers on the 172 side hoping that I would be able to see the name of the computer and such( like I can see the other computers on my network
) but no such luck. What can i do to see and access the computers like they're on my network? - Any help is much appreciated

Just a few suggestion to get you started.

Check whether this is DNS related. Can you access the systems using just their IP addresses. If so you should check into the way DNS services run. e.g. \\172.168.1.1 at the run box does it connect and give authentication. Remote desktop to an IP, does it work?

If you can definately ping the systems, use a traceroute command to ensure data is routing correctly.

The most probable issue (apart from dns) if you definately can't access shares/remote desktop etc through their IP is going to be the actual access list/firewall control for the vpn link. ICMP (ping) is a totally different type of protocol traffic. Trying adding a test rule into your IPSEC policy - AT BOTH ENDS to ensure that all IP traffic is permitted between the sites.

Also unlikely (but worth considering) is whether your ISP blocks any VPN traffic. I'm in the UK and have encountered (only in a rare case) and situation where the ISP blocked IPSec traffic on the basis it wasn't a business broadband package.

Hope this helps.
