My company has the Cisco 5000 VPN. I have been using this for about a year over dial-up with no problems. I just got a cable modem and tried the VPN via the cable modem directly and it worked great. Now, I have just bought a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router and I can't get the VPN to work even if I have a hard link through the router instead of using the wireless card. I made sure I have the latest firmware, and have made sure I have selected Block Wan request: Disabled, IPSEC pass through: Enabled, and PPTP pass through: Enabled. Still, I cannot get VPN to work. Does anyone else have this type of setup, and have you gotten it to work? If so, I would really appreciate any tips on how to get the Linksys router to work with the VPN. Thank you.

I am having the exact same problem with the same hardware. Please let me know of the solution. dbreiny@earthlink.net

I'm not sure how the PPTP pass through feature works on the Linksys router. I do know that Cisco VPNs use the following protocols and port numbers:

IPSEC:
ESP - IP 50
AH - IP 51
IKE - UDP 500

or

PPTP:
PPTP - TCP 1723
GRE - IP 47

You need to set up port forwarding and have it forward these ports from the Linksys router to the IP address of your computer on your LAN. I believe Cisco routers commonly use IPSEC and Microsoft VPNs commonly use PPTP. You might not need to forward all of these ports but at the very minimum you will need to forward IKE (UDP 500) for IPSEC to work. Give that a try and let me know if it helps. If you need more clarification on something, just ask.

For me there were no need to set port forwarding at all, only to enable IPSec passthrough. Also only the latest Linksys firmware release for this router, version 1.37.9b, worked properly, so get it from and upgrade your router. I also needed to get the latest VPN client. So for some reason it seems that all the VPN related pieces had been fixed recently. But once I upgraded everything it worked fine.
