To all,

Ok guys, kind of think I might want to play with a little VoIP.

Basics I or anyone who was looking at learning VoIP, not counting routers I already have :)

I am thinking the basic setup is -
Router: a 1760 router with CME 4.1 (is that the latest) on it. I have seen some labs on Ebay include a Cisco MC3810 Router also with a 1760, why?

I have also seen CME on everything from 26xxXM routers to 3725 routers but I see that the 1760 is considered a "voice" router - any comments why or why not?

Switch: a 3524-PWR-XL-EN to power the phones (or power units for the phones) I like the switch route for several reasons, would the 3524 be my best "bang for the buck"?

Phones: at least 2 Cisco IP phones like 7940 or 7910, anything I should watchout for? I have seen some sites say the phones have been "registered" with the router already?

Like I said, this is both for me and for a few who have asked about getting the CCNA voice!

I can better understand things when someone says, you connect the 1760 to the 3524, you plug in the phones to the 3524 and away you go (config of course) ...... now if you want to take that lab and connect to the outside world you would need this WIC or you would do this next????

I had looked at some LINUXX Astrict boxes before and had a fair understanding of connecting to POTS or a VoIP provider.... lets talk CISCO :)

I'm kind of in the same boat, trying to decide what to get for equipmemnt.

I can speak for the mc3810, I have a pair of them already. You want to watch what they have on them for interfaces. FXS will connect to an analog phone, FXO to the CO, then there is some atm pieces with it as well for trunks I think. I picked up the 3810's with FXS interfaces when I was going through QoS studies. The router itself is like a 2500 series, with 2 serial interfaces, so could setup a T1 and make analog calls across, or just send the test tones across.

Not certain what to think about your switch selection. For PoE, it's probably the best bang for the buck, but personally not a fan of the 3500xl series. If you can get a 3550-PoE, I'd go with it. I think the life of the 3550 through other certs would be better off.

I've been eying this auction, but not certain I couldn't piece everything out for less:

Have to give a nod to Kevin Wallace, who is author of some of the Cisco Voice books for this website too:

Very interested in what you come up with for a lab design on it.

lerdalt,

I looked at that one you posted - lots of switches and 2610 I do not need and $90 to ship

I have been looking at this one, free shipping and more to what I think I would need -

He also has one for $699 with just the 1760, 3524 and the 3 phones.

I am also priceing "piecing together" :)

Hello Gene,
The UC520 is still too expensive for a lab router but you may take a peek at the SR520 as you may find a deal if you keep your eyes open! Would be a nice addition to a Voice lab I am told!

UC520 and SR520 Router setup! Has a nice example as the SR520 has integrated 4 port switch!

SR520 on eBay: (Gotta love the seller's username.. Kind of has the subliminal message thing going on! LoL)

I would point out one thing Gene.. They list three different types of phones in the above link (for no reason actually) but I have been told on several occasions that you SHOULD mix it up and use a few different models! Makes since actually so you can become familiar with the advantages/disadvantages of different models and not have to spend the MAX price times 3! LoL

OK.. That said the amount of features (Voice Related) available to the 1760 over other routers is significant! Here is a list of features that the 1760 w/ Advanced Enterprise Services c1700-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T8.bin has over the maxed out SR520 w/ sr520-advipservicesk9-mz.124-22.T.bin... This is why so many people opt to include the 1760 (Note that there is a plethora of features available on the newer SR520 but most are Security/QoS such as RADIUS/TACACS+, IGMP Snooping, CEF 6-to-4 tunneling, lots of IPv6, SPAN, Wireless with WPA and a Zone-Based Firewall! However, check out the 1760 advantages:

A lot of this stuff is Voice related and is why you will want a 1760 in your lab! (Plus you can not beat the price!)

I would research the possibility of this setup..

1760
2x 3550 (At least one EMI but I have read that you can upgrade an SMI to EMI)
SR520
7940G (IP Phone)
7960G (IP Phone)
7970G (IP Phone)

I would also post the setup that you are considering in CLN and place it in front of as much criticism as possible prior to purchasing!

Also, I would print out the blueprints for the various CCVP exams and start comparing required features.. Some should overlap and most should be covered by the 1760 and 3550's! I am certain that the above setup with the appropriate cards would cover everything but again I would post to CLN CCVP as well! Maybe even throw up a short question on DSLReports in the appropriate section! Hope this helps!

I am setting up a voice lab for my CCIE with VMWare/GNS3. Blindhog did a REALLY nice set of videos on how to set up the labs. If you have a router on your physical LAN with DSP's in it, you will be able to do transcoding, and you will not be able to do MGCP/SRST.

I would also like to point out that you could avoid the SR520 in your lab but take a peek at this from the Cisco site:

Click on the models sections for the 500 series info!

Catalyst Express 500 series Switch

I would first look at the conventional setup IE. 1760/3550's et. al. but also take a peek at these as time progresses as you may be able to compliment the lab if you locate a killer deal on one of these (and especially a 500 Series Unified Communications!!! UC520 However, the least expensive at the moment is $2250.. LoL At least on eBay)

Burt, I will have to look at my 26xxXM's, I think I got some IOS's from a FTP server that appears from time to time :)

I did get a used book on Amazon - I think it is Hacking VoIP for $5 used and seems to be a practical look at VoIP. Like I said, I need VoIP for Dummies - phone connects to switch to get power and stuff from router, switch connects to router running CME........ The book is general VoIP and the reviews were good - I think published in 2007 or 2008.

If you have never tried Amazon for technical books and then check the used link that comes up with the new book page :) I think the new price for this book is $23. I got it used for $5 !!!

I also got some VoIP CBTs on Ebay for like $17, I will review them when they come in.

Ok - I got VoIP Hacks Tips and Tools for Internet Telephony by Ted Wallingford - O'Reilly Publishing Copyright 2006, 306 pages for $5 USED and the book looks brand new!!!!!

I think I bought it Tuesday and got it in the mail today - I NEVER pay for expeditited shipping :) ......hmmm if you do, do they just hand it to you through your computer or maybe Scotty beams it down :)

I will do a complete post on it for anyone interested, so far it is general, which is what I was looking for, practical with lots of examples and a easy read to get me up to speed on the VoIP verbage.

This is where the readers of this post will have to determine, are they going for a cert, it is a cert forum or are they trying to setup VoIP at home or in an office. I will learn enough about VoIP first so that I can have a good understanding of the lab equipment I need (with a Cisco flair) with the idea of adding a cert at some time.

I ALSO want to understand where these LINUX PBX servers fit in and play with Cisco IP phones etc. These seem to be getting popular with small business.

Keep reading and add your thoughts!

I would begin with the Cisco CCNA Voice and worry about how everything fits together as a whole later Gene. Cisco has always been good about explaining the bigger picture when explaining theory!

Billy,

I just got a 40% off coupon in the Email from Borders for Friday and Saturday, I think I will go look what they have for Cisco VoIP - feel, touch and read the books as I enjoy my coffee and then come home (not far) and check prices :)

If they are good, I will go back, if not I will get them at Amazon or !!

I also have some Cisco Voice CBTs or something I got on Ebay for $17 - will review that also. He had good feedback, only one person out of 340 said his stuff was illegal copies :-( I know Ebay watches for that stuff.

Off to bed now - it is 1:30AM - have been cleaning my home office - fired up a HP P1 running Windows ME, that little computer with 2 HD and about 48 MG RAM runs like a champ!! And the onboard video is sharpe as a tack on the 17 inch Sony CRT it is hooked up to :) I don't think I have run it in about 2 years!!

Oh well !!!

I thought the steps for Windows ME recovery included grabbing either your Win98 CD or Win2000 CD?

Burt and lerdalt,

First - I HATE WINDOWS ME :) however, in 1 out of 1,000,000 PCs it ran OK on and this HP Vectra ??? P1 200 is one of them. I have 2 of them that I got 3 for $100 (gave 1 to my sister) back in 98-99 when I was playing with NT BC (Before Cisco) :)

In my Windows lab I have PCs with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT Server 4.0 Windows NT Workstation, Windows ME and Windows 2000 - the Windows lab is on the "Blue LAN" on my IPCop network. When I first had some issues with FIOS, tech support asked me what OS I was running, I returned with what flavor of Windows do you want to try? He said I have TCP/IP trouble, I returned with - funny, I have tried Windows ........ and ALL of them are getting IPs or have static and ALL can ping each other accross the workgroup, and ALL are seen in Network Neighborhood etc. - he bumped me to tier 2 support :)
