Cisco Vlan question - which vlan to put nt server?

If I have two vlans with 20 clients each and they all need to access the nt server for authentication. Which vlan do i put the nt server in? I want to setup vlans for traffic/security. I know that I need to put a router in the middle for inter-vlan routing.

My first idea is to choose the one vlan that access' the server the most and put it in that one, resulting in the other vlan having to go through the router to get to the server.

Am I on the right track, or way off? Thanks

(layer 3 switches are not an option in this case.)

The practice that I use is this... I usually create a network segment just for clients and one dedicated for servers. I have several campuses that are interconnected via layer-3, so I have multiple vlans for clients based on business units, and vlans for server depending if they are unix or windows based. It really depends on how you want to deploy your network. I just find it easier to manage and allows for some flexibilty should the need arise to have the clients and server segregated.

I think you can also get server network cards that allow them to be members of multiple vlans. I would think though that you would not see much performance degredation with either option with the current vlan sizes you have. It can depend on the switches and router speeds.

Best performance will be with the server in the same vlan as the most clients that need it.
