We are moving to a SIP connection soon and will be removing our PRI lines. We currently have a mixed environment of Cisco and Nortel equipment. Currently Cisco takes all connections from outside our walls and sends it over to our CS1000’s. I am assuming this will be the case with our new setup as well. PRI comes into our
Cisco routers via E1/T1 card and goes out to the CS1000 via an E1/T1 card in the Cisco router.

What would be the best course of action to ensure communication between the two systems continues once this change has been implemented?

As long as the PRI connection between the Cisco and Nortel isn't changing you should be fine. Have them put some test numbers on the SIP trunks prior to porting and make some test calls. That's about all you can do.

PRI connection between the two system will no longer exist. PRI circuits are coming out and will be using SIP to connect to PSTN.

What would need to be done on the Nortel side to continue to make calls?

What I would like to be able to do is have calls made on Nortel phones to hit the CS1K -> Call Manager -> CUBE -> PSTN. And reverse of calls coming in to a Nortel phone. IS this possible?

You haven't said very much about the CS1000 system you have. What release is it and do it have any licenses for IP trunks?. How many IP sets exist on the CS1000 system?.

Release 7.5
We do have licenses for IP trunks
System is not available to me at the moment but roughly 500 IP phones still exist on CS1000. Ranging from 2002, 2004, 1120, and 1140.

It seems to me that your only option is to get the CS1000 configured up with IP trunks onto the Cisco system. This will have to be done before anything else is changed if all PRI trunks including the link between the 2 systems is due to be ceased.

Are both systems close to each other?. Is there a reason why the PRI link between the systems has to be removed?.

Both systems are in the same rack. Our Cisco support company says they will no longer work once we remove the PRI and go SIP. Could we keep the PRI connection between the two systems and continue with a SIP connection to the PSTN?

I find it very odd that the Cisco PRI card PABX link wouldn't work after the move to SIP for your PSTN lines. Personally, it sounds like crossed lines here and I would get confirmation from your Cisco support people by explaining the fact that you have another phone system with a PRI link that isn't external, but sits next to the Cisco.

I asked them if the card would move as we are switching to a new router and they told me no, it won't work. They installed the card in the Cisco router a couple years ago so they do know the setup.

If that is the case, then you will need to find out if you CS1000 supports SIP or H323 and how many trunks it's licensed for.

You will still need to have it all configured, tested and in use before you cease your PSTN lines via PRI on the Cisco system.

I will continue to work on this with our Cisco Vendor. I appreciate all of your support on this.

Like FirebirdScrambler I find it very odd that the E1/T1 card won't work alongside with the SIP links. Normally You would have them working together and make the route switch overnight.
How much time will they take to make the switchover? It should be possible to disable the PRI link and start working on the SIP link overnight or over the weekend if they must, but is still strange they won't work together. Maybe they want You to burn your ships, so there is no going back ;)
