Hi Guys - We are trying to connect two Cisco switches together in one of our wiring closet to free up some more network ports. When we configure the 2nd one with our Vlan data we get the following error.

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Can anyone help resolve this.

Regards

try just

switchport mode trunk

Andy many thanks for your quick reply, although this does not help. We are using a Gigastack interface top join to 2950 switches together and I am informed that this will not work. The correct error is

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Any further help much appreciated.

Cheers

OK, sorry.

That's what I use on mine though - also 2950's, but admitadly I'm trunking on the last two FastEther ports and not the Giga ports.

Works fine and defaults to 802.1q
