Anyone know why you can't ping an SVI after it has been created? I created it, issued no shut and i can't ping it from the switch. I can ping it once i trunk it to another switch. annoying.

For the line protocol state of an SVI to be 'up' it needs an physical interface in the VLAN (either an access port or a trunk) to be up and in a STP forwarding state. This has always been the case. The logic is why would a switch want a Layer-3 interface to be considered Up when it has no active ports? If this wasn't the case and the SVI interface was up regardless then you would likely see black holing of traffic as the switch would advertise and accept traffic for the network, however it would not be able to forward it to anywhere.
If you want an interface on a switch that is reachable always and doesn't rely on a Layer-2 port to be active then consider using a Loopback interface.
