what is the cisco supervisor blade used for? our switch currently has two. on the active light one has a amber color one has a green what does the lights mean? if i'm adding more blade to the switch do i have to add supervisor blades also?

The supervisor card is basically the brains of the switch. If you have 2 supervisors installed, they are there for redundancy. The one with the amber light is in standby mode and is ready to take over in the event the primary is pulled out, reloaded, etc.

You don't need more supervisors if you add more line cards. However, depending on what how busy the switch is, you may need to add memory to the supervisors.
