Cisco Router 851w default username and password does not work

Very new to Cisco and just recently bought the 851w router to learn from. Router is hooked up to my laptop and was told the best thing to do is clear it out. Got the instructions on how to clear it out but the "cisco" default username and password is returning the message "% authentication failed". Is there a way to reset the router to where the defaults will work and i can continue on??
TIA for any help and tips! Very excited about this new path!

have you tried no username or password?? you could try the password recovery process
