Hi We have 2 cisco pix 506e devices, 1 at site A and 1 at site B. I have an issue at Site B that it randomly drops its connection to the outside world. Using ping tests, I have been able to trace it down that I can ping the internal port of the pix when the link is down but not the external port of the pix.Does this sound like a intermittent hardware fault or config?ThanksKev

what do you have upstream of the problematic pix?? do you have a cable modem, dsl modem, router??

It's a router. We have configured both devices to run at 100mb full rather than auto. Also with our tests, when the link goes down we can ping the internal interface but the external fails. Surely the router is irrelevant?

it depends on how you have things wired. if you are running the pix directly into the router then if the routers physical interface goes down then the pix's interface will be down also. it may very well be a hardware issue with the PIX, but look at the router also.

The pix goes into a switch which then goes into the router. Is there any diagnostics that we can run to try and see if it's config or hardware?

I don't believe you can ping the external interface from the inside.

Why is that? We have opened up a rule to allow us to

Kevin,

On a pix traffic can't come back in the interface that it went out of. Thus, if you are behind the pix you can't ping its external interface.
