cisco phone configuration

Hello,
I was just wondering if any configuration is stored directly on the phone itself or if the configuration comes directly from call manager.
I was just wondering if can connect directly to my phone via it's ip address and make changes to the display or anything like that.

The information remains within call manager... At times I have noticed that the phone retains old ip information. In our lab we move phones around and it shows the old network then finds the new network and loads with the programmed information from call manager....
