For those of you who are familiar with this technology, is there any benefit in implementing CEF on a network which uses static routing. From what I have read it seems like this technology is truly beneficial when used in an environment using dynamic routing. Thanks.

Hello,

AFAIK, CEF is advantageous even when only static routes are used, since the FIB is used instead of the routing table, using a more advanced search algorithm and data structure, and - that is the most important advantage - bypassing the need for process switching.

HTH,

Everyone should use CEF unless your router is low on memory, or your doing something really custom.

We are going to be installing CEF on our core switch. We were going to install MLS but have decided to go with CEF instead.

MLS and CEF are two different things...

you can't have CEF without MLS... CEF is a layer 3 process, MLS gives you the layer 3 features..

I agree CEF is a layer 3 process it alows switching speed at layer 3 instaed of 2
